salty dog

I always prefer savory over sweet.  If I am hungry I find sweet things cloying.

This is why I LOVE savory candy.  Specifically spicy, curry, and salty caramels and chocolates.

These are the best I have had so far and I want them.  Now.  However I cannot rectify spending 2 dollars per piece of chocolate.  Ho hum.

Where are you cheap salted mass market caramels?

diet coke

I love Diet Coke. And I love Mentos. And I have loved the early “put mentos in a 2 liter of Diet Coke and watch it explode” experiments.

But I also love fountains. And this is where these all get tied up together.

  • I have returned from mecca, the All Candy Expo in Chicago. The largest candy trade show in North America. I am wiped out, since I had to do it all in one day, but needless to say it was like a kid in a FREE candy store. My favorite candy was the Sour Spray from Too Tarts. And they didn’t give me anything free, sadly. I have about 10 lbs. of candy to go through, much of it international. I was surprised at how international the show was. Full expo coverage is available here. My haul looks something like this: mmmm….candy I also ran into the Candy Podcast family completely randomly! The voice sounded familiar and they were all wearing their podcast shirts! Random. There was a lot of grabbing things, more so than even library conferences where people will go batty over paperclips. There was one exhibit late in the day which looked like it had been attacked by candy zombies. It’s an odd situation to be in when you get picky and snobby about which free candy you’ll take, but when you only have a limited space (you could only take approved bags on the floor), you must have standards. On the way out we ran into some Apple Store employees who had scammed their way into the show. I salute candy scammers! In fact I was surprised there weren’t more. My favorite was a trio of women dressed similarly who all had bluetooth headsets on. Very futuristic/Destiny’s Child. Are you really doing power business at the candy show? Basically the show ran us ragged, and I will now be ruined for all other conferences! Alright I am crashing…..zzzzzzzzz. (4)

Kale & Candy

Tomorrow I will be attending the All Candy Expo with a coworker. I happily await far too much candy.

Until then I have vowed to eat fairly sensibly and it’s been all greens and lean protein. Today I picked up some red Russian kale from my farm share and wondered what to do with it. I remembered my trip to Stubb’s in Austin, TX. They had a Serrano Cheese Spinach side dish which knocked my socks off. I found a copycat recipe and made it with the kale. I used jalepenos tho and added some yogurt. Oh man it was so awesome. The kale doesn’t wilt as easily, but it’s awesome.

Tomorrow, if I do not go into insulin shock, I will photograph the candy stash. Woo!
