The Netflix Suggestion Engine gave me some funny recommendations today. Why did it think I liked Beyonce and Cher, I wondered. Oh, because of stereotypes.

I’ve actually been really impressed with the guesses that Netflix comes up with about what movies I’m going to like.
It didn’t really get good until I’d rated about 100 movies, but now it’s kind of creepy how good it is. There are plenty of movies that people have been suggesting to me for years, but that I didn’t want to go see for one reason or another–I’ve been ignoring their suggestions for years. But I’ve been so impressed by other Netflix suggestions, that I’ve started watching some of those movies. It’s weird–when it comes to movie recommendations, I trust Netflix more than I trust my friends and family.
