sightings

I never see anyone famous, mainly because I do not pay attention. I do enjoy the weird tension when a famous person does walk down the street and people pretend to not know who they are. I did see someone famous today so here’s my list of sightings thus far:

  • Malcolm Gladwell (outside of the Gourmet Garage. I had previously met him at a book signing, so this was a TOTAL letdown. But the hair was awesome.)
  • Kid Rock (in the elevator at work)
  • Three Six Mafia (work elevator)
  • Marky Ramone (in the audience at CBGB)
  • Dustin Diamond (walking out of a Persian restaurant near the Whitney with his hand in a girl’s pants)
  • Martin Scorcese (outside of the Pod Hotel, walking with grocery bag)
  • Al Sharpton (today, outside of a parking garage/public library across from MOMA)
  • Ira Glass (outside of a subway stop on the UWS, talking to a friend about how weird it is when fans recognize him.  I am not going to lie, I had to repress screaming like a Beatles fan)

This would seem to say I should only go to work and art museums.

New Yorker sightings I would love to have:

  • Anderson Cooper
  • Woody Allen
  • An Olsen twin
  • Lou Reed
  • Chuck Klosterman

I was always being told by people I had just missed a celebrity. I saw the backs of both Tarantino and Clare Danes’ heads. (Not at the same time.) The only ones I remember seeing face to face were Wallace Shawn as he was standing on a street corner chatting with friends, and Matthew Broderick as he was coming out of Port Authority. That one was fun because he actually made eye contact and gave me a little smile.

I love celebrity sightings! Mine from the three weekends I have ever visited NYC include Mary Stuart Masterson (walking by Central Park), Blair Brown, Carole Channing, and some famous ice skater guy that my gay friend recognized. Also we went to some of those pier antique sales and spent the whole time walking behind Kate Moss and another model friend right at the peak of her fame, and we also saw Mandy Patinkin and his kids come in a side door, look around, and quickly go back out.

I have also seen Jesse Jackson in a floor length leather coat in O’Hare when I was about 10, and I got Sam Waterston’s autograph in the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Cambodia when he came to speak about land mine removal & I happened to be there for a field school. And finally, I met Tom Wopat when he came to Kalamazoo to do summer stock theater. “Do not speak to Mr. Wopat about the Dukes.”

How could you see Marky Ramone in the “audience” at CBGB’s when the store is closed? Get your facts straight before you post something so absurd!

uh, cuz it was before it closed. why are you so angry about marky ramone sightings?

I once saw Tom Wopat and Henry Winkler (The Fonz) on the same day. If only Mr. T or Punky Brewster had stopped by, then I would have met everyone I thought was cool when I was 4.

Lou Reed will be in Nashville next week! I had to hold my nose to buy the tickets, but it’s going to be worth it.
