holiday question

Of fruit pies, which is your favorite? Not too long ago, I shocked a crowd of people by saying I would take cherry pie over apple any day. Really? I thought red always won!

So what kind of pie suits your fancies?

ADDENDUM: While I am proud that many respondents make their own pies, this question is more if someone else is making your pie. I mean envisioning a work-free pie, which would you choose?

I go back and forth between whether I like cherry or apple best. Although when I was a kid and my family would go to the local cafeteria I would always picky cherry.

If I’m making one myself I almost always make strawberry-rhubarb. I went to an awesome Thanksgiving at a friend’s house once where there were 10 different kinds of pies and we all rated them to help decide which ones would make the cut again the following year.

The best pecan pie I ever had (usually my favorite) was at a Thanksgiving. I tried to find out who made it but NO ONE knew…..biggest let down ever!

Depends. If I make it, apple. If someone else makes it or its from a restaurant, blueberry. But I like cherry too.

And I don’t like pumpkin pie. At all.

I actually don’t care much for apple pie unless it’s been dressed up (or… down?) as crumble, cobbler, crisp, brown betty, or strudel. Apples I feel need a bit more texture than a plain flakey cruest can provide.

Strawberry rhubarb pies are, indeed, terrific, and a strong contender. Diner-style blueberry and cherry pies leave me cold, except for their nostalgia value — the filling tends toward gelatinous and oversweet. I’m also no great fan of lemon meringue or key lime, though both can be done well.

Pecan pie, pumpkin pie (from scratch, not can), sweet potato pie… oh, my mom make a nice eggnog custard pie. All these are great holiday choice, though the rhubarb strawberry may still be winning over all.

Did you know there’s no pie here? Only fruit tarts, which a good, but not quite the same.

I wish I had some pie.

Man, I made a lot of typos in the last comment! It’s nearly incomprehensible. Apologies — I guess I got too excited about pie to read over my work.

Does coconut count? Because coconut cream pie is THE. BEST. EVER.

And I make damned good pie. It’s genetic.

Well first, I was specifying fruit pie, so while pecan would always win for me, it’s not really a fruit pie, nor would an eggnog or sweet potato count! And I think the matchup of “crappy gelatinous cherry pie” with other pies is a bit unfair. I mean, I assume we’re taking into acount the pie is made well.

I agree with you regarding apple pie’s texture. It needs to be crunchier. Actually I see the apple pie succumb to gross gelatiny more than other pies.

While I guess coconut and creme pies count, I always think of them in another category. I hate meringue so I avoid them. And I hate lemon sweets.

I always think of rhubarb pies as a little low rent, since rhubarb seems to be the veggie no one can do anything with but put it in sweets when it is masked by other fruit. Rhubarb seems like it has SOMETHING TO HIDE!

That is sad that France has no pie. I guess that is why apple pie is so American?? I do like tarts though.

Now I want some pie!

Ain’t no meringue in my coconut creme, baby. Cream, whipped by my own little hands.

One year we made a cranberry pecan pie. I wouldn’t say it was my favorite, but it made unique use of both cranberries and pecans. The same year we also made pumpkin pie, Swedish apple pie (unique flavor PLUS streusel = magic), sweet potato pie, and chocolate pecan pie aka candy pie. In the last of the listed pies, we were supposed to drizzle the top with melted chocolate. We didn’t get the ‘drizzle’ part of the instructions, so it was a solid mass of pecans, pecan pie goo, and melted chocolate.

I love cherry pie, but I, like many others, have a soft spot in my heart for strawberry rhubarb. It’s my parents’ favorite, and their anniversary is in May, so it’s how we always celebrated - with the first of the berries and rhubarbs.

I also hate meringue.

Shane votes for chocolate cream pie or banana cream pie.

I very much love key lime pie, but for a while I was obsessed with it, and then I was afraid to eat it because I feared it wouldn’t live up to my expectations.

I don’t have an answer. I’m sorry.

cranberry pie is interesting. I think I would totally love a cranberry pecan.

I have never had a truly great cherry pie, but I think it would knock my socks off, so I’m going with cherry. I made a cranberry cherry pie for Thanksgiving 3 or 4 years ago, and it probably would have been awesome with fresh cherries instead of goo from a can, which made it pretty meh. For tomorrow, I am making 1 apple crisp, 1 pumpkin pie, and 1 banana cream pie — so you can see that I lean pretty heavily toward fruit pies in general.

See I have never really had a good cream pie, excepting chocolate pies. I will have to investigate this cranberry pie business.

Man I am going to talk more about pies. This is a controversial topic.

I was asked to bring dessert to T’Giving this year…I’m not a baker. Traditionall make a curry pumpkin/squash soup and decided to craft a pumpkin pie along the spice lines of the soup…black pepper, ginger, cinnamon, chipotle, maple syrup, eggs, heavy cream and pumpkin. Sour cream sweetened with a little ginger preserves topped the pie. It was terrific…not really sweet with a nice “bite” to it from the mix of spices. Also made a meyer lemon goat cheesecake…yum.

To your question: pies are too often sweet and gooey…I love fruit, flour, and butter a little lemon and just a touch of sugar. Following that recipe I’d take appple or cherry or apple/cherry!

Mmmmmmm. Pie.

I find most apple pies very disaapointing. If the apples aren’t tart enough, and the balance of spices isn’t right, the pie ends up dull. Which is most of the time. Even “good” apple pies seem bland to me. That’s why I make my apple pies with cranberries and walnut.

I heart strawberry rhubarb pie. I also heart plain old rhubarb pie. I like cherry pie as well. I like all of these above the plain apple pie.
